Thank you for choosing to participate in Privacy International’s “Global Survey to map and identify the use of technology for authoritarian purposes and repression.”

Privacy International is a London-based NGO that works globally with partners to advocate for legal and technological solutions to protect people and their data from exploitation by governments and businesses.

The purpose of this survey is to scope the authoritarian uses of technology around the world. It aims to learn which technologies are being used in a repressive manner, where, how, and by whom. It also aims to broadly map the impact that repressive use of technology has on specific individuals and communities who are already subject to surveillance and criminalisation, and their human rights.

Through this survey, Privacy International seeks to learn how we can best assist civil society and NGO actors like yourself in counteracting these practises and reducing the harm they cause. We hope that the responses to this research may lead to a closer working relationship between your organisation and PI as well as to the establishment of an informal civil society coalition working to resist authoritarian uses of technology, and we are seeking to gauge what interest there is in such an initiative.

We understand that your time is valuable. We only invite you to respond to the questions for which you have already available information to share with us including links and references where possible. Please do not conduct research specifically for the purpose of responding to our questions.
