BGI Nexus Global Ethics Survey

About this survey

Governance of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI safety and ethics are some of the world's most pressing issues. We would like to hear your thoughts about AI ethics and safety, and how AI should develop and be governed in the future!

The Nexus project is a not-for-profit project under the SingularityNET Foundation. At SingularityNET, we are working towards Beneficial AGI, and want to ensure a positive future for all. This means listening to global opinion and understanding human values around AI. One of the things we want to do in this survey is find out how you would want to contribute to the direction of AI development in the future or be heard on the issues of safety and ethics.

The information from this survey may be used as part of a research project that can inform broader policy (for example if we talk to governments or write papers to contribute to the academic community). We may also use it to guide how SingularityNET develops AI or AI governance systems, or to guide how we think about safety. You can follow updates and sign up at any time for our newsletter on our website!

We don't require you to provide your personal information, unless you would like to participate further in the project or be kept informed.

Any information released to the public will be anonymised and your personal information will remain confidential. Only the project coordinators (Haley Lowy, LeeLoo Rose, Esther Galfalvi, and Vanessa Cardui) will have access to personal data. No information will be published that could identify you, your answers, or your institution/organisation, and the information we collect will be held securely in accordance with GDPR (2016) in secure cloud-based accounts.

If you have any questions, or have provided any personally identifiable information about yourself (e.g. your e mail address) and would like your answers to be withdrawn, please e mail to: begin@singularitynet.io. If you wish your data to be withdrawn, please e mail within 2 weeks of submitting your answers. We cannot withdraw anonymous responses.

Thank you for your time!

1. How knowledgeable do you feel about AI?

2. Which of the following best describes your perspective on AI?

3. How well informed do you feel about AI ethics and policy at this moment?

4. How much influence do you feel you personally have in the world's AI ethics and governance?

5. Who should be involved in deciding how AI is developed and governed? (tick any that apply)

6. Do you have any hopes or expectations for AI in the future? (e.g. functions it could fulfil or problems it could solve)

7. Do you have any concerns or fears about AI?

8.

What do you believe are the biggest ethical issues in AI and why?
(Ethics is about whether AI is used responsibly, treats people fairly, and does not negatively impact society.)

9. What do you believe are the biggest safety issues in AI and why?
(Safety is about making sure that systems work reliably, predictably, and without causing unintended physical, psychological, and economic harms)

10. How important do you think transparency is in AI development?

(Where transparency is about developers and AI companies being open about how the AI works)

11. What uses for AI are the most important to develop at this moment? (You can drag and drop options to new positions)

12. What AI project would you like to see developed, which you think would most benefit the world? (e.g. AI assistants, climate modelling, AI support for people who are differently abled...)

Be as specific as you like!

13. What criteria would you consider when deciding whether to support an AI project?

14. In your opinion, what are effective ways for the general public to have a say in decisions about how AI is developed and used?

15. Are there any other important issues related to AI that you believe should be considered?

Now we would like to ask some general questions about you! We ask these questions to get an idea of the differences between groups, for example in different countries. As with all the other questions, you don’t have to answer these if you don’t want to.

16. How old are you?

17. What is your gender?

18. Which country do you live in?

19. How would you describe your ethnicity? For example, the ethnic group(s) that you identify with; the country or culture that you belong to. Your answer needn't fit with any established categories you have seen - please define yourself as you feel.

20. What level of education have you completed?

21. Is any of your training based in an AI field?

22. Where did you see this survey?

If you would like to be kept informed about the project, would like to know the results of the survey, or would like to hear about opportunities to participate, please provide your email address and we will add you to the mailing list.
