Our aim

Collecting information on drug-related deaths and near-fatal overdoses (including alcohol poisoning) helps continually update our real-time system for tracking sudden deaths (RTSS).
Tracking near-fatal overdoses is a new but important part of our work to stop drug-related deaths. This is because people who have had a recent near-fatal overdose are more likely to have a fatal overdose soon after.
Continually improving RTSS helps us quickly spot patterns and trends, allowing us to work with local partners to prevent more incidents. It also helps ensure people get extra support to avoid overdoses, including access to naloxone and training on how to use it when needed.
