A research project investigating: Gender Based Differences in Attitudes Towards Sexual Assault- The Bystander Effect.
My name is Cherilea Setter and I am studying at University Centre, South Essex, working towards a degree in Psychology and sociology. As a part of my final project, I am required to produce a research project and a finalised report of my findings. I would like you to participate in my research project!
This form aims to provide you with essential information about my research project, and to obtain your informed consent for participation. Please take the time to read through and feel free to contact me should you need any further information.

What is the aim of my study?
The primary aim of this study is to find out how gender differences in people’s perceptions of victims and perpetrators of sexual assault affect their likelihood of intervening in social situations.
How is my study conducted?
To gather this information, I will be conducting a scenario-based survey with open and closed ended questions to gather the relevant data, which may take between 10-40 minutes to conclude based on the answers provided. Each scenario will have a set of questions that only require a yes, no, maybe, or unsure answer. You will then be given an opportunity to expand on your reasoning however, this is not required (but would be greatly appreciated!).
Once completed all data will be collected to identify any patterns or themes from the answers I receive. Due to the distressing nature of this study, upon completion, you will receive relevant information that will signpost you to helpful organisations and helplines, should you need additional support.
Will the researcher know my identity/ How will the data be stored?
Your participation in the study will be completely anonymous. All responses given in this survey will be treated and used with the utmost confidentiality. All data collected will be password encrypted, stored securely and will be used solely for research purposes. Once the study has been completed, all data will be permanently destroyed.
Can I withdraw from the study?
Participation in this survey is entirely voluntary. You may choose to withdraw from the study at any point during the collection phase without any consequences. However, due to the nature of the data collection method, once all data has been processed, you will be unable to withdraw your responses. For this reason, you have until the 10th of April 2025 to withdraw consent. Please rest assure that all responses will remain anonymous throughout the entirety of the study. If you do choose to withdraw consent, you will be provided with a code that only you (the participant) and I (the researcher) will know. If you email this code to me, I will remove your responses from the study.
Trigger Warnings?
This study contains some very sensitive subjects, including Sexual Assault, Rape, Harassment, and The Bystander Effect. Some participants may find this distressing, support information will be provided upon completion of the study.
