IOP Impact Project Pathfinder on AI & Physics — Engagement Survey

Physicists have been long-term heavy users of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a trend that is unlikely to change. Physics has contributed to the development of AI both in terms of innovations and feeding into the workforce and it is likely to continue to do so. So, physics needs AI and AI needs physics.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) Business Innovation & Growth (BIG) Group submitted a proposal for the IOP to carry out work to identify the challenges and opportunities in AI & Physics, as well as stakeholders for engagement and influencing. This work will constitute an Impact Project Pathfinder that will seek to understand what the physics community thinks are the challenges and opportunities in `AI for physics and physics for AI’ and identify areas in which the IOP can have an impact, by leveraging its credibility and ability to bring together all areas of physics and connect to business and industry.

The purpose of this survey is to gauge the views of the physics community and explore AI & Physics innovation opportunities, to bridge across physics disciplines and connect academia and industry. The results will inform whether further work is needed to influence at a policy level and a practical level, and identify where AI & Physics might impact the UK economy.

The IOP will share the findings from this survey towards the end of the year and host a panel discussion to explore further some of the findings. This event will be open to members and non-members to attend in person or online. We also plan to use the results as a starting point for an in-depth exploration of the topic in a dedicated invitation-only workshop, the outcome of which will be shared by the end of the year.

About the survey

  • All responses are anonymous. The equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) data collected at the end will only be used to check whether we have a reasonably diverse sample of respondents.
  • If you would like to speak to the IOP about this survey, discuss your answers with us or find out more about the project, please email scienceandinnovation@iop.org.

This survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.
