The project:

Hate crime prevention charity, Protection Approaches is recruiting eight community-based organisations working with groups who may be affected by hate crime. The project is intended to help those organisations to build their capability, knowledge and/or networks to appropriately support community members who are targeted.

Following a consultation to understand where this support could be most impactful, we are particularly interested in applications from organisations supporting Migrants and Refugees, Disabled people, Black African and Afro-Caribbean people, Gypsy, Roma and Travelers (GRT), East and Southeast Asian people, Latin American and Latinx people and LGBTQ+ people.

You can read the more on the background of the project by downloading the info sheet here (https://tinyurl.com/HCCORPinfo). This project is supported by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC).

What support will organisations receive?

Over the course of a year the Protection Approaches expert team will support each of the organisations through individually tailored support programmes to:

  • Increase their awareness and understanding of hate crime among community members who they work with
  • Feel confident to provide an initial, basic level of victim support to members of their community who report being targeted by hate crime
  • Build new relationships with stakeholders in police, local and regional authorities, civil society and elsewhere focussed on hate crime victim support and/or prevention
  • Build sustainability of hate crime victim support and / or hate crime prevention work through developing grant proposals and other fundraising strategies
This support will be tailored to the needs of each organisation but will consist in part of several trainings (such as on hate crime legislation and reporting, victim support, advocacy, and outreach) to support the achievement of the above goals. In addition, organisation will receive funding between £4,000 - £7,000 to help cover costs associated with participation in the project.
