Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to technology that uses learning algorithms to produce content that can include audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos. An example of this includes ChatGPT, a chatbot that can generate human-like responses to prompts. We are aware that the use of generative AI presents real benefits for teachers and students in schools and colleges. At the same time, clear concerns have been raised about the use of this technology. Some of these benefits and concerns have been explored in previous calls for evidence opened by the department and reports (see: Generative AI in education Call for Evidence: summary of responses and Generative AI in education: educator and expert views) We are interested in building on this previous work and exploring further the specific potential safeguarding benefits and risks which may arise from the greater use of generative AI in schools and colleges
