Thank you for your interest in taking part in our public call out for ideas relating to the Petticoat Lane Heritage Trail. The project is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and is being led by London Historic Buildings Trust.
London Historic Buildings Trust has been working in the Petticoat Lane area for several years on different heritage projects. We recently delivered a temporary Heritage Trail made up of floor stickers that you might have seen around the area. More information about the temporary Trail project can be found here: petticoatlaneheritagetrail.org
The new funding received is to deliver Phase 2 of the project which will install a permanent Trail around the area. We are working in collaboration with members of the local community, local organisations such as Toynbee Hall and Streets of Growth, and with the support and expertise of design and architecture studio, make:good.
The mission of Phase 2 is to facilitate local people to identify and champion Petticoat Lane's diverse and, in places, unrecognised, heritage via a permanent Heritage Trail in the public realm that links to digital heritage resources. Additional benefits are: to provide paid training, learning and social opportunities for local people; stimulate local pride and empowerment; foster emerging local partnerships; encourage new audiences and increased footfall to Petticoat Lane; and to inspire minds.
The permanent Heritage Trail is going to be thematic - a different theme, or topic, of Petticoat Lane's history for each 'stop' on the Trail. We're roughly aiming for 10 'stops'.
As there is so much history around this rich and diverse, but actually very small, area, a thematic approach to the Trail will allow us to celebrate and share more of the story of Petticoat Lane. The Trail's website will be linked to each 'stop', where you will then be able to read individual stories and more detail about that particular theme.
We have now recruited and trained a group of local people with strong personal connections to the area and community, who are helping to research the content for the Heritage Trail, with support from a team of historians, oral historians and heritage consultants. They have now started exploring the themes and topics that we think the Trail could cover.
This survey will ask you about these initial ideas for themes. We'll then ask you for any other ideas for themes and topics that you think the Trail should incorporate. The final question will then ask about ideas for specific people, places or events that you think should be included under these themes.
Although we're asking for as many suggestions as possible, it will not be possible to include every idea in the Trail, but we will make every effort to include as many as possible. The research team is also being guided by a Steering Group consisting of local stakeholders (such as Toynbee Hall, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, City of London) as well as community representatives. We still have space on the Steering Group, if you are a local person and wish to help guide the project - please get in touch with Laura Owen, Heritage Trail Project Officer on hello@lauraowen.co.uk .
