Why do we want to have these conversations
During the pandemic we have seen many examples of how neighbours have acted as first responders at street level to ensure that no one goes hungry , no one is lonely and we have seen individuals in communities taking action offering a listening ear or a lending hand, growing connections and building trust.

We know that whatever happens post COVID-19 it is not going to be about doing more of what has always been done (under more stress, for more people than before and with even less financial resources than ever). Even if that were the case there simply will never be enough professionals and volunteers to do this. It is instead about adapting and responding to the reality of the situation and acknowledging the role that Citizens can and do play in creating change.

Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is centred on starting with what is strong in neighbourhood life, not what's wrong and provides a way of understanding how Services can walk alongside Citzen led change in a way that does no harm to the way in which people 'do' community.

This is intended as a reflective conversation about how we have seen communities respond to COVID and whether by using ABCD as a lens to look through, we can begin to explore these stories of citizen led change to inform what comes next in the context of people living with Cancer.

Where and when will the conversations take place?
Our conversations are planned to take place on Tuesday 3rd November from 9.30 - 11.00 and Thursday 5th November 12.00 - 1.00.  You will only be required to attend one.  The conversations will be facilitated by our partner Nurture Development and will be delivered online via video conferenceing using Zoom.

We can support you if you haven't used Zoom before and will send you a guide as part of the joining instructions.  If you need more support you can email the Macmillan Engagement Team at: engagementscotland@macmillan.org.uk.

What is ABCD ?
ABCD stands for Asset Based Community Development. In simple terms this means asking what matters to you, working with you and empowering you to make changes.  We are delighted to be supported in this work by Nurture Development.  The Nurture Development approach to ABCD is to ask not "what's wrong in your community" but rather "what's strong in your community".  Improving the Cancer Journey will build on what is strong is Midlothian and through your involvement we will discover the assets which exist to support people affected by cancer. We welcome your involvement.

Will I need equipment?
As long as you have a computer, laptop or tablet with an internet connection, you’ll be able to take part.
