Introduction
The Children, Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel (the Panel) wants to hear what you think about the provision of secondary education in Jersey.
The Panel is undertaking a review that will focus on the funding of secondary education, and it plans to compare the funding provided by the Government of Jersey to the requirements and outcomes of the system. As part of this the Panel will consider how, or if, public expectations are reflected in how the budget for education is spent.
In the questions that follow, the Panel refers to “secondary school education”. This phrase should be taken to mean all aspects of the secondary school experience, not just academic learning and the curriculum.
Secondary education typically provides education for individuals between the ages of 11 - 16 years old. The Key Stage 3 curriculum covers Year 7 to Year 9 in schools (typically students aged 11 - 14 years old) and the Key Stage 4 curriculum is for Year 10 to Year 11 in schools (typically students aged 14 - 16 years old). Most pupils will follow GCSE courses in Years 10 and 11. Students at some secondary schools may have the opportunity to undertake vocational training with Highlands College.
Provided and fee-paying secondary schools which receive funding from the Government of Jersey are:
- Grainville Secondary School
- Haute Vallée Secondary School
- Hautlieu School (from Year 10)
- Jersey College for Girls (fee-paying)
- Le Sente School (referral led admissions)
- Le Rocquier Secondary School
- Les Quennevais Secondary School
- Mont à l’Abbé School (referral led admissions)
- Victoria College (fee-paying)
Private secondary schools (some receive grant funding) and other secondary education options available to Jersey residents include:
- Beaulieu Secondary Convent School
- De La Salle College
- St Michael's Preparatory School (up to Year 9)
- Off Island Boarding school options
- Home schooling
