Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino announced on Apr. 26 that it plans to build a 1.8 million-square-foot convention complex at the resort. The new facility will be built in addition to the 3,300-room Four Diamond Water Resort.
The new three-story center will include more than 1 million square feet of exhibition space suitable for industrial trade fairs, national and international association meetings, and big business meetings. According to the Mandalay Resort Group, a Las Vegas-based casino operator, the new facility will also include the 100,000 square feet ballroom, the largest hotel ballroom in the U.S.
The state-of-the-art facility will be located on 16.5 acres adjacent to the existing 190,000-square-foot Mandalay Bay Convention Center. The technologically modern facility will feature some of the latest advancements in voice, data, and fiber optic transmission capabilities. It will also include a 10,000-square-foot business service center with staff and equipment to handle the day-to-day business needs of conference participants and convention participants.
The new center is also designed to facilitate the entry and exit of major trade shows. Three separate tractor-trailer loading docks on two different floors can accommodate 36 trailers at the same time.
Upon completion of the project, Mandalay Bay will provide a total of nearly 2 million square feet of conference and exhibition space, including four ballrooms ranging from 31,000 to 100,000 square feet, 1 million square feet of exhibition space and more than 75 concurrent breakout meetings.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Mandalay Convention Center is scheduled for June 2001, and the facility's first show will take place in the summer of 2002.
