The financial impact of caring for someone with living with MND

We know carers of people living with MND can experience financial hardship as a result of caring. Our 2022 report found over half (52%) of MND carers report spending over 75 hours a week providing unpaid care to their loved ones, and eight in ten (79%) spend over an average working week (35 hours) providing care.

Carers are entitled to Carer’s Allowance if the person they care for is in receipt of a disability-related benefit such as Personal Independence Payment or Attendance Allowance.  In addition, they must care for more than 35 hours per week and earn less than £151 a week after tax and expenses.

As of April 2024 the Carer’s Allowance rate is £81.90 a week

Anecdotally, we hear that the impact of the cost of living crisis has only exacerbated the financial hardship faced by carers and the benefits received increasingly do not cover these costs.  We have therefore launched this survey to capture this evidence and need your perspective, experience, and insight into the financial issues caused by caring.

Results from the survey will help inform and develop our understanding for our Support MND Carers campaign and your input will play a pivotal role in shaping our policy and influencing activity.

This survey is designed for both current and former carers of people with MND to share their perspectives. It should take 10/15 minutes to complete.
